Sonicare Flexcare Platinum Review: Should You Buy?
For many years, Oral-B toothbrushes were the kings of electric toothbrushes. Then along came Philips with the Sonicare sonic toothbrush range and Oral-B found equal rivals.
Sonicare toothbrushes are designed to drive fluid between your teeth and along the gum-line which helps remove plaque. If you asked me what the best sonic toothbrush was though, I would tell you that it’s the Sonicare Flexcare Platinum.
Read on to find out why.
What Features does it have?
In the best electric toothbrushes of the year article, I said that the Oral-B Black 7000 has the best design I have ever seen for an electric toothbrush.
However, the boffins at Philips have obviously been working on their designs because the flexcare platinum certainly gives the 7000 a run for its money.
As you can see white and grey color scheme work really well combined the green LED lighting and porcelain-type finish. The new dedicated buttons and angled head may be for practical reasons but they also look really stylish as well.
As you would expect from a premium product this Sonicare electric toothbrush comes with a variety of different options. There are three cleaning modes which are clean, white and gum care. Within each mode, there are three intensity levels low, medium and high which gives you a total of nine different brushing experiences.
If you have sensitive teeth or you are not used to the sensation a sonic toothbrush gives you then you can start on a low setting and then build up to intensify the cleaning experience.
In terms of features, you have a two-minute timer, which beeps every 30 seconds to let you know when to clean the next quadrant of your teeth. There is also a very effective pressure sensor that will let you know if you are brushing too hard.
The Sonicare flexcare toothbrush has a much longer battery life than its Oral-B counterparts. After initially charging it for a full twenty-four hours you can get up to three weeks of life out of it compared to only 10 days with an Oral B electric toothbrush.
The white travel case is very sturdy but stylish and the toothbrush body and brushes fit in the case perfectly.
One model of the Philips Sonicare flexcare platinum comes with a it also comes with a UV sanitizer.
If you are worried about all the germs lurking in your bathroom that might be on your toothbrush then the sanitizer will zap 99% of all known bacteria that may be lurking on your toothbrush head.
You can fit two heads in at once and a soft light glows to let you know that it’s sanitizing. For some people, this is not a big deal so you can buy a model that doesn’t include a sanitizer.
The brush head that comes with the platinum is called Inter-Care and incorporates a mixture of bristle length and an increased density of bristles. Some bristles are aimed at sweeping away plaque while others clean your gum line.
There are also specific bristles for tooth surface polishing. The long slim shaped brush head feels like it glides easily over your teeth. The handle is also nice and long which makes it easy to clean those hard to reach areas. You get two of these to start with. In clinical studies, this head is more effective than using a manual toothbrush. You can read a report here.
What about the Diamond Clean Head?
The diamond clean is also a good toothbrush. The main selling point is the head itself which has a higher density of angled bristles which help eliminate more plaque and stains so that you get whiter teeth. The bristles are shaped like a diamond hence the name.
I really like the diamondclean brush head but prefer the extra features that the flexcare platinum comes with. The good news is that all the Sonicare toothbrush heads are compatible with the all Sonicare toothbrushes including the flexcare platinum so you can get the best of both worlds!
What’s it like to use?
Your mouth does feel weird the first time you use a sonic toothbrush but once you get used to it, it actually feels quite pleasant. I love the way it makes my mouth feel so clean and fresh afterwards.
I will run my tongue over my teeth before and after cleaning them. Before you can feel the sticky plaque on them but after using the flexcare platinum, there’s nothing but squeaky clean teeth. In fact, if you combine cleaning with the sonicare airflosser, after a few days your teeth feel squeaky clean all the time!
It was actually quite hard to find any complaints about the philips sonicare flexcare platinum. If you have never used a sonic toothbrush before then the experience can feel really weird the first few times. That’s why the set comes with low settings so that you can get used to it and build up from there. Some people received faulty toothbrushes that they needed to return.
Some long-term users felt that their older Sonicare models were better and didn’t like the new changes. My favourite complaint was from one person who said that Sonicare should have provided different color rings on the toothbrush heads so that you can distinguish toothbrushes in a family. If this is a big issue for you then don’t even consider buying this toothbrush ….. or just get a Sharpie.
My last gripe is a small one. There is also a flexcare+ and there used to be a flexcare toothbrush so it can be hard to distinguish the differences between the different models. Basically the platinum edition is the newest model with the latest features.
The best Sonicare toothbrush because…
The sonicare flexcare platinum combines all the knowledge that Philips has combined over the years they have produced the Sonicare range and added some fantastic new features to give you the best that Sonicare has to offer. If you want the best sonic toothbrush available then get this one.
